When it comes to your teen and braces, there are two big questions to answer. When should a child get their braces on? And when can they get them off? The answer to both questions is going to vary depending on the orthodontic problem the braces are designed to treat. For most patients, having these devices for between 12 to 30 months is enough. There are very few dental issues that are going to require a patient to have them longer than this.
In most cases, medical professionals will not recommend that a child gets a full treatment of orthodontic braces until all of their baby teeth have fallen out. This is especially true if the cosmetic problem being addressed is not that serious.
Of course, there are always exceptions. For example, if a patient has a severe dental condition that is going to take two years or more to fix, then some orthodontists will encourage patients to get orthodontic treatment as early as possible. However, if braces are applied before all of the adult teeth erupt, there is a chance that the dental correction achieved will get undone.
Another example of when a child should get braces early in life is when the dental condition is causing social issues. For example, if a child has an overbite that is so large that all of the other kids are making fun of them, or if a child has an overbite that is so large that it puts them at risk of damaging the front teeth, then the child would benefit from having braces applied earlier.
If a child has a pattern of tooth growth that leads to an overbite and they get orthodontic treatment too early, the natural growth pattern of their teeth may undo any correction that that was done. For this reason, parents should typically wait until teeth growth has stabilized before thinking about braces for their teen. This is something that is best determined by our experienced orthodontist.
